(Verse 1)
Well, I showed up at six, but he was late out to the gate,
Said, “Sorry, darlin’, got caught up with the hay.”
His boots were muddy, and his hands were rough,
But he winked at me, and it was romantic enough.

He said, “Let’s take a ride on my big green Deere,”
It’s a song; so, I thought it meant he liked me, but now it’s unclear.
Is he into me or just showing off his farm?
Mixed signals flyin’, I can’t read this charm.

(Chorus)
It’s milking time, but where’s my sign?
Is he flirting with me or just buying time?
I can’t tell if it’s love or a tractor pull,
These mixed signals got me feelin’ like a fool.
He’s got cows waitin’ in the barn and corn in the field,
But what’s he got in his heart that’s real?
Milking time, and I’m confused,
Is this romance; the cows aren’t amused?

(Verse 2)
He handed me a bucket, said, “Give it a try,”
Milking a cow? Well, I’d rather die.
But I gave it a go, just to not be accused,
Of dodging the chore, though I was clearly confused.

He laughed and said, “You’ll learn someday,”
But all I’m learning is he’s hard to gauge.
Is this a date or some kinda farm test?
I’m in over my head, and this milking machine ain’t the best.

(Chorus)
It’s milking time, but where’s my sign?
Is he flirting with me or just biding time?
I can’t tell if it’s love or a milkin’ school,
These mixed signals got me feelin’ like a fool.
He’s got cows waitin’ in the barn and corn in the field,
But what’s he got in his heart that’s real?
Milking time, and what are his plans?
Is this romance; of is he just short of hands.

(Bridge)
He talks about silage like it’s sexy and sweet,
But I’m still waiting for a date that’s off of my feet.
Maybe his signals are all wrapped up in chores,
Or maybe he’s showing me the farm life’s his core.

(Chorus)
It’s milking time, but where’s my sign?
Is he flirting with me or just biding time?
I can’t tell if it’s love or am I just a tool,
These mixed signals got me feelin’ like a fool.
He’s got cows waitin’ in the barn and corn in the field,
But what’s he got in his heart that’s real?
Milking time, and I’m feeling lost,
Is this romance or just cows being the boss?

(Outro)
Maybe one day he’ll put down the pitchfork,
And I’ll know if it’s love or just farm talk.
But until then, I’ll be right here in the barn,
Stuck between milking time and country charm.

Milking Time and Mixed Signals

Alan Nafzger (2021)

I showed up at six, heart full of hope,
But he’s late to the gate, tied up with rope.
Boots all muddy, hands calloused and tough,
He winked at me, like that was enough.

“Hop on the tractor, let’s go for a ride,”
But it’s hard to tell if he’s trying to hide
His feelings, or if the farm’s his true love—
I’m lost in the signals, like clouds up above.

He hands me a bucket, says, “Give it a go,”
But milking a cow? I’d rather say no.
I spill it, I slip, I feel kinda dumb,
And he just laughs like he’s having fun.

“One day, you’ll learn,” he says with a grin,
But I wonder if I’ll ever win.
Is this a date or a farmyard task?
I’m here for romance, is that too much to ask?

It’s milking time, but where’s my cue?
Does he like me, or is he just passing through?
I’m knee-deep in cows, but where do I stand?
Is this love, or just part of his plan?

He talks about silage like it’s something sweet,
While I’m just waiting for a chance to retreat.
Maybe his heart’s buried deep in the soil,
Or maybe I’m just another girl in his toil.

Cows in the barn, corn in the field,
But what’s in his heart? What’s real, what’s concealed?
Milking time and mixed-up signs,
I’m stuck between rows of love and farm lines.

Perhaps one day, he’ll put down the rake,
And give this farm girl a real heart to take.
But until then, I’m caught in the grind,
Between milking time and signals that blind.
